The 90’s
Another good Hamtag lite walk through the past, brings back lots of memories of old friends and games.
I Started the 90’s with a good wargamer friend where we got together every other week. Ended the 90’s getting my teenage son into wargames. My list has to reflect both paths in my life.
- Ardennes (Standard Combat Series – (SCS) When icy winds of December come around I have the urge to get my Bulge fix.
- GCACW – Great Campaigns of the American Civil War – Here Come the Rebels. I found the Maryland campaign to be one of the most interesting scenarios. I always used the force markers with the units off map. It gave a fog of war element to the game.
- Hannibal Rome v Carthage – Still one of my favorite like how it merged the political area control with military. I found the mini battle card game to be a really interesting way to resolve battles, more intense that a CRT lookup
- Battle Cry – My son loved this game it really got him into wargames – I like command broken up into left/center/right it really handles the issue with command in the pre-radio era.
- CWB – Civil War Brigade series – No Better Place to Die (Murfreesboro), April Harvest (Shiloh). I like the way it plays with strong formation aspects and the command system.
Honorable Mentions
Paths of Glory, Blue vs Gray I have to give kudos to them. However, I didn’t include them since I didn’t get into them until after 2000.
Also Rise of the Luftwaffe, Dixie – my son really enjoyed them and they filled the niche that games like Broadside, Dogfight did for me at his age.
